John Patrick Fleming

            John Patrick Fleming was born on February 25th, 1965 in Abbeville, La.  The son of Floyd “Teetie” and Gaynell Fleming, he has two sisters Lisa and Julie and one brother Bubba Fleming.  John is married to the former Jackie Broussard of Abbeville, La. and has two children Christopher and Jeanne-Claire.

            John began playing organized sports in Abbeville and quickly developed an affinity for baseball.  He made the all-star team for every age group of Minor League, Little League, Babe Ruth, Senior Babe Ruth and American Legion.  John would like to recognize the coaches who helped to cultivate his skills as a player.  Minor League coaches Curnal Cessac and Bradley Polambo; Little League coaches- J.Y. Mula and John Baudoin; Tommy “Poch” Frederick in Babe Ruth; and Carroll Duhon, coach of the 1982 Senior Babe Ruth State Championship team.  Last but not least, Tommy Picard, Babe Ruth Baseball coach who also led the team to the State Championship Title in 1980.

            As an Abbeville High School Wildcat, John excelled as a left handed pitcher.  He was the only freshman to make both the varsity and All District Team.  John continued to stand out as a sophomore.  He made All Parish, All District, and All State honors.  His junior year he posted a 9-2 record, an ERA of 1.10 with 131 strikeouts, including 21 in a single game.  That year John was again named to the All Parish, All District and the AAA All State teams.  In his senior year John was selected as the MVP on the All Parish Team, MVP on the All District team and was selected for the third time to the All State team.  He posted an 8-3 record with an ERA of 0.91 with 105 strikeouts in 69 1/3 innings. He also participated in the Louisiana High School Athletic Association All Star Game his senior year.  John lettered all four years of his high school career.

            John attended Seminole Junior College in Seminole, Oklahoma for one semester, before attending East Mississippi Junior College and pitching for the EMJC Lions.  He made the Mississippi Junco All Star team and received MVP Honors for the All Star Game, in which he faced 7 batters, struck out 6, walked one and picked him off at 1st base.

            John coached along with Troy Theall and Mark Mula the 13 year-old Abbeville All Stars in 1986 and 1987.  Mayor Brady Broussard recognized John Fleming as Someone Special on the Bayou in 1992 for rendering Outstanding Services to the area and the City of Abbeville.

            John is now employed with Acadian Contractors, Inc. and is a project manager.  He enjoys hunting, fishing and spending time with his family.

            John attributes most of his success to being raised by outstanding parents who encouraged him with love and support in all of his endeavors.  He would also like to thank all of his teammates throughout the years for playing a major part in his achievements.

            On being chosen to the Abbeville Hall of Fame John says, “It is an honor and a privilege to be inducted amongst Abbeville’s finest athletes.”
